| • Why do I write about cinema? Before I chose to apply to the faculty that I am currently attending, I wasn’t really interested in much more than entertainment when watching a movie, but still there were certain criteria that attracted me to some movies and not others. It was durring the time spent preparing for the admission exam that I started realizing what cinema really is, and how me liking certain films was a result of years of visual culture.
Even though initially I was more interested in the screen-writing classes, after the first year my interest shifted towards film analysis (and by extension, towards film history and theory). I find it fascinating how filmmakers manage to “trap” their audiences in a dark room and play with their illussions and thoughts. I also consider film a very versatile art, because it has adapted to different kinds of viewers by developing “subspecies” to please all tastes.
Last but not least, writing about films is for me a way of better understanding them ; setting thoughts on paper is a way of organizing them in order to make an analysis possible. | ||||||
