| • Why do I write about cinema? Since I was a kid I always enjoyed watching movies, mostly on TV. I only realized there was something special -inexplicable for me at the time- in the action of watching a film, when I found myself immersed in the experience of going to the cinema, religiously, visiting this dark room, sharing laughs and sadness with complete strangers. Something else lay behind the stories, the characters, the artists that wrote, filmed, and performed every film I was watching. It was a feeling I learned to understand thanks to friends and peers -more than books- that had this same experience while watching a film : It was life itself coming out the screen, life from different realities, persons, languages, stories, that were related at times to something I may have experienced. I learned there’s always something to rescue from every movie, and my enthusiasm to share those moments with others lead me to write about films, first in personal journals, then in blogs and online publications. I heard critics and directors address the idea of the completion of a film. A film doesn’t finish when the ending credits roll up. The film completes when people talk about it, discuss it sharing a coffee, read another person writings, or actually write about it. That’s why I began to write about movies, I wanted the films I watched to complete themselves, and wanted to share the result with others. I can’t call myself a "film critic", I consider myself a cinephile, a movie-goer that likes to write, and share, not only what I learn but also the sources of knowledge that I find out there, those that are probably more useful for other people that approach cinema in diverse ways : scriptwriters, directors, producers, scholars. The film critics that I enjoy reading the most are the ones whose writings I can identify, with their thoughts and reflexions about a film in particular. Since they surpass me on their brightness and articulation, I can only try to achieve such clarity of ideas everytime I start writing about a film, and even if I’m never quite satisfied with the result, I will keep trying. | ||||||
