Andreea Dobre (Romania)

I am currently a student in the Psychology department of the University of Bucharest. In 2007, I participated in Let’s Go Digital !, a filmmaking workshop for teenagers, which was a first chance to literally put a finger on the issue. Since then, I also got familiar with Photography and Scriptwriting through informal courses or workshops. And what matters the most, I developed my skills in the only sport I like : keeping eyes glued to the big screen. I started writing reviews for an alternative cultural website and I am participating in the 2010 NISI MASA Film Journalism workshop in Cannes. I live and don’t work in Bucharest.

• Why do I write about cinema?

Screens are everywhere ; any moving image has the potential to share something and touch us. Even so, that only happens when all the elements of film language work together as a whole, helping a spark of wisdom light up a flame of emotion, of both despair and joyful wit. I think film shoud be like a shout in the dark, and what is a shout without an echo ? That is why, whenever I go to the cinema, I also pay attention to the flesh-and-blood narrative that faces an on-screen plot. What impresses who ? Where is the line between the artificial and the honest ? Analyzing a film means exploring the what and the how surrounding its message. Above all, my most important question is : do we need this ? Taking a step back and organizing a subjective impression into a coherent text is a constructive exercise for my perception, critical thinking and taste.

I’m the one who doesn’t give friends peace until they watch my latest cinematic crush : as a humanist, I believe in promoting what and who I consider relevant and valuable. My interests have always gravitated around other people’s lives and souls, all the outer clues of inner dynamics, and Cinema is one of their finest, most complex means of expression. What I appreciate the most are films that refuse to leave me when the screening ends and, from time to time, I feel like some of them were made specifically to please my heart and mind. Cinema got me addicted because it adds up to the enormous magic of the human condition.
