Davide Oberto, curator of one of the three Italian sections, reveals us how to be one of the 11 docs selected (from 300 received) or one of the 24 shorts (from 500). No doubt about the documentaries : “The movies we selected are Cinema in the first place, that’s why they’d deserve to be distributed in theatres. We prefer observation documentaries and those who are at the crossroad between fiction and doc, but we have also chosen more classical approaches, which strenght is the topic and the ability of the director to be trusted by his protagonists. Today it’s in documentaries that we see the best Italian cinema, but only a few of them (even if the number is increasing) are presented aborad”.
The panorama of Italiana.corti is more complicated to define : you can’t really use criteriums but sensations. “They must have a cinematographical dignity, but more important they shouldn’t be only an exercise in style. They can’t be nothing but a transition product towards the feature film : in a short movie as well you have to feel the urgency, the passion”. Using this guide line, the selection is very heterogeneous : sperimental films, classic ones, documentaries, animation.
Regarding Spazio Torino, this special section remains part of the festival to mantain a bound with the city and its young directors : “This year the selection has been made for the first time with the same criteriums of the other sections instead that with a popular jury, and the results are great”.
As last thing, a note that is very important for an European magazine : for the first time ever these three sections will have english subtitles.
