(500) Days of Summer by Marc Webb

USA

If The Smiths or Belle & Sebastian mean the world to you, Marc Webb’s first feature will be a nice trap, featuring the soundtrack of your unfictional life. He does meaningfully use a handful of memorable tunes of our generation.

Be honest, you love movies you can relate to: guy falls for girl with lovely smile and cute laugh. After watching it, you’ll want anybody who dares to write about this film to agree with you. It will help if you’re in your late 20s, and tend to care for details and coincidences.

Real life is not an "innovative anti-romantic comedy", with a could-be happy-ending. You’re not the main character of your favorite French art film. The song you love doesn’t play out loud when you’re walking down the street on your happiest day ever. Real life isn’t like that… is it?

Assuming you’re not a critic reviewing the "newest indie sensation", your appreciation of (500) Days of Summer is entirely dependent on the way you relate to its characters on a personal level. And in the end, that’s the most honest way to remember a film.
