Editorial Nisimazine Abu Dhabi 2010 #8

It doesn’t happen too often that you find an article written by a photographer on the front page of a magazine, but then the Abu Dhabi Film Festival is unusual in many ways.
You might have seen us carrying heavy bags of equipment or hiding behind the camera just before the flash-light blinds you for a moment. You will probably not remember our faces, but the photographs we take will soon become the visuals of your memories about the event. A few months later, trying to recall what the Abu (…)

Come closer, I have to whisper something: Films festivals make me happy. I love cinema - yeah I know, it’s not an extraordinary statement when cinema enthusiasts are legion here and you must have heard it 1001 times - but this is what’s wonderful about film festivals, right? We walk, laugh, dream and sometimes have love-at-first-sight moments with cinema together all day long. At screenings when the movie theatre darkens and the screen brightens, we all hold our breath in a synchronized (…)

Walking at night in the corridors of the Emirates Palace, I bumped into Shirin Neshat. One of the most important audiovisual artists in the world and one of the few whose art is a healthy personal therapy for me. I watch the YouTube video of her piece Turbulence every time I’m going through a hard moment. It serves as a reminder that, although things might get difficult, our spirit can take us beyond the circumstances. That’s why, my beloved artist, I couldn’t help asking to hug you. The next (…)

In the UAE the dreams of young directors are being achieved, and the audience loves cinema
In recent years, discussions about Arab cinema have rarely excluded speculation about the future of the Gulf film industry. Despite the novelty of cinema in the UAE, it now has pride of place, especially in light of the Film Movement, which adopted a new generation of young filmmakers with dreams of establishing an organisation to support projects without creative restriction or conditions. (…)

Being both a film journalist and a festival producer myself, my stay at Abu Dhabi has been a tremendously satisfying experience.
As I have been roaming around the luxurious and breathtaking corridors of the Emirates Palace I find myself trying to understand exactly what part does a festival of this nature takes as a driving force behind the development of a local film industry.
Back in Portugal I work in FEST–The International Youth Film Festival, a small but growing independent event (…)

Editorial Nisimazine Abu Dhabi 2010 #3

When I first landed in Abu Dhabi four days ago, I had a pleasant and animated chat with the cab driver about cinema. He told me of the frightening increase in cinema ticket prices here and the fact that he was often disappointed after watching a film because the trailers he had seen before were better and he felt his money was wasted. One question led to another, and we soon came to the subject of film criticism. In his view, critics are often too elitist and don’t take the audience into (…)

Editorial Nisimazine Abu Dhabi 2010 #2

Scrolling down the page of the Abu Dhabi 2010 team members on the festival’s website, you might find it absurd that almost half of the team (or maybe more?) are foreigners. It is actually fascinating to see this unique group of people in abayas, saris and miniskirts working together. However, with such a huge mix of nationalities involved, what is left from the local identity of the festival?…a lot!
After all, only 20% of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population is made up of locals - or at (…)

Editorial Nisimazine Abu Dhabi 2010 #1

Welcome to the first issue of Nisimazine Abu Dhabi, your indispensable guide to this year’s film festival. The magazine is the product of a journalism workshop organised by NISI MASA, the Paris based network of European cinema.
Since 2006, Nisimaziners have walked the Croisette in Cannes, strolled down the red carpet in Torino, and filed dispatches from locations as diverse as Lima and Tehran, paying particular attention to emerging talents.
You could be forgiven for assuming these (…)
