This week, for the first time, I felt snow falling over me. For most, this was no surprise; in fact, they knew that it would happen that day. But I’m still not used to chasing down meteorology reports every day. I come from a tropical country where one can comfortably wear shorts all year long, even when it’s raining. The surprise was a pleasant one though, just one of several surprises occurring during this IDFA season. The first feelings beyond the new, the never seen… it’s something lots of (…)

A big chunk of the documentary experience is sneaking a peak at the ‘exotic’ in the broadest sense of the word. Even if its your neighbour dancing the hoolah in his backyard. From this follows the too often casually used description of documentary films being mirrors into society. You walk away with a better understanding of the ‘other’. But attending IDFA is not just for a moment imagining yourself in a hoolah-skirt.
A mirror is an inanimate object with a reflection of something that you (…)

Documentaries are like time machines and spaceships, transporting audiences to unknown, exotic, friendly, eccentric or terrifying worlds through the experiences they create.
An international documentary festival has a double effect on its audience; within its movie theatres it contains the universal world of documentary but on the streets there is a physical universality created by the presence of guests from all over the world. For the traveller each new adventure created by a film is (…)

The IDFA temporary continent occupies an area of less than 1 square kilometre. Although it may sound very strange, for 20 years now each November this fleeting district suddenly pops up in central Amsterdam (NL), stays there for approximately 12 days, drawing the attention of locals and foreigners, and then disappears. The amazing phenomenon (classified by experts as nano-transitional urban superimposition or, more simply, multi-geocultural sporadic bubble) has been of course heavily (…)

Having been at IDFA for the last couple of days brings a question to my mind: Why do I watch documentaries? To learn easily about certain subjects, explore different forms of reality, or get one step closer to the truth?
Documentaries…The visual history of humanity. They teach me what ideas and faith mean to people in different times and spaces, and witness how politics manipulate faith and abuses people’s consciences. As the festival continues, the films gain different meanings; they (…)

Free associations. Minds freely reeling away. Illumination through film. These were my first impressions of this year’s IDFA poster campaign. If you missed it on the city’s squares, corners and flags, it’s a simply-designed grey poster with a person’s mind connected to many film reels. Some argue that in its greyness it does not do justice to IDFA and that it’s not catchy enough. To me though, it fits like a glove.
IDFA might be an internationally anticipated festival, but it has a select (…)

Five days after the IDFA festival ends, there will be a special day in Holland. Old men will be wearing long red dresses and ridiculous-looking hats. They will be accompanied by a group of other men in colorful puffy pants and make-up. No, it will not be a nationwide cross-dress party (although that would actually have my vote), but on the 5th of December it is time for the yearly celebration of Sinterklaas.
Many a child considers this bringer of gifts and candy as their absolute hero. (…)

Rows of ceramic figurines stand in line like little guardians on frilly lace circles, both inviting you to take a look at them and the world beyond, and at the same time defending their home turf from peering eyes. Usually I find this sight of my neighbours windowsill comical (especially if she’s sneaking a peek herself from behind them), but after seeing films like Below Sea Level, Slingshot Hip Hop and the other films featured in this issue, it seems totally bizarre: how can people place (…)
